Łódź University of Technology has teamed up with business partners in Poland and Turkey to develop a household wind turbine capable of cooperation and integration with other renewable energy sources.

Łódź university spokesperson Dr. Ewa Chojnacka said that the project worth €300,000 was awarded in a competition organized by the National Centre for Research and Development and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.

The consortium members are the Łódź University of Technology, Polish energy sector companies Enerwis and Ergos and Turkish start-up Devecitech, developer of the Enlil smart turbine.

Project leader Dr. Michał Lipian from the Institute of Turbomachinery said: “The starting point for our research is the Turkish Enlil wind turbine, and the aim is to develop an innovative and highly efficient vertical axis wind turbine, which we have named Ninlil.

“The turbine will be suitable for urban and suburban applications, generating energy not only by natural winds, but also by winds generated by vehicle traffic, for example.”

He added that the name for the new device refers to the Mesopotamian wind god Enlil, in honour of which the Turks named their turbine. He had a wife named Ninlil.

He said: “We have given her name to the project that +improves+ the original machine.”

The Lodz University of Technology will design the generator for the turbine and test prototype turbine under urban conditions. Ergos will develop the control and automation systems tailored to the needs of the new machine, and Enerwis will be responsible for ensuring that the prototype meets the requirements of the renewable energy market and for working with external partners.

Professor Krzysztof Jóźwik, the Rector of the Lodz University of Technology and head of the Institute of Turbomachinery said: “I am glad that the university has recently obtained so many pro-ecological projects.

“Prosumer microgeneration is becoming increasingly important, which is why it is so important to accelerate its development.

“The ambition of the team designing the household wind turbine is to bring the design to such a level of technological readiness that will make it possible to start the process of certifying the machine in order to introduce it on the market.”
