Students from Gdańsk best in international solar boat regatta

Students of the Gdańsk University of Technology, members of the science club KORAB, won the solar boat regatta in the Netherlands - DONG Energy Solar Challenge. Among the winners was also the former president of KORAB and Gdańsk University of Technology graduate, Bartosz Puchowski.

The finals of the fifth edition of DONG Energy Solar Challenge took place on July 5 in the Dutch province of Friesland. The competing teams design and build solar-powered boats. The winner is the team whose boat sails the five-leg route in the shortest time in its class.

The competition is divided into three classes. Class A is for single boats with a maximum overall length of 6 meters, using up to 4 solar panels. Double boats with a maximum overall length of 8 meters and using up to 5 solar panels compete in Class B. The third category is Top Class for boats equipped with solar panels with peak power not exceeding 1,750 Wp (Watt peak). The competition is also open for boat prototypes, not listed in the general classification.

In Class A, first place went to the boat built by Bartosz Puchowski (Cree Yacht - Gdynia) - graduate of the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology and president of KORAB in 2004-2008.

Best in class B was double boat GUT SOLAR, designed and built by students in 2010. So far is has sailed 1,000 km on solar power.

"We are happy. In the previous regatta we finished second, with little loss to the team from Amsterdam. This time we managed to beat all other crews" - said Vice Dean for Science at the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, Dr. Wojciech Litwin.

This year\'s regatta lasted 10 days, and the teams raced the route of more than 220 km. DONG Energy Solar Challenge 2014 was attended by a total of forty crews, including teams from Belgium, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Germany, the Netherlands, Turkey and the U.S.
