Botanical discovery in Mazury - Heart-leaved ox eye in commune Piecki

In the woods near Piecki in Mazury, the first in north-eastern Poland natural site of heart-leaved ox eye has been discovered, a plant considered to have medicinal properties - reported Forestry Strzałowo Forest District.

Several hundred of these plants from the family Asteraceae have been found in the headwaters area overgrown with birch, adjacent to of the lake in the commune Piecki. Some stems are over 2 meters tall and have yellow flowers with a diameter of 10 cm. In Poland, their natural sites were previously found only in Bieszczady Mountains and Low Beskids.

"I do not want to reveal the exact location of these plants, because a collector could come and dig them out. It has happened in the case of rare varieties of orchids, which ended up in private cultures - told PAP Andrzej Ryś of Forestry Strzałowo, who discovered heart-leaved ox eye in Mazury.

Heart-leaved ox eye (Telekia speciosa) is considered to have medicinal properties. Extract of dried flowers has anti-inflammatory and cholagogue action, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol. It is sometimes used in the treatment of atherosclerosis, gallstones, pancreatic disorders and prostate hypertrophy.
