Over 50 percent of Poles overweight - poll

Fifty-one percent of Poles in a CBOS survey admitted they weighed too much. Thirty-four percent of this group suffered from overweight, 17 percent from obesity. Forty-six percent said they weighed according to norm.

Only 3 percent claimed to be underweight.

Overweight affects more men (61 percent) than women (42 percent), 3 in four overweight respondents were over 65.

The poll authors note that weight problems affect more men than women and tend to grow with age, with overweight reported by only one in six (16 percent) of respondents in the 18-24 age group and 50 and 72 percent in the 35-44 and over 65 groups.

More overweight/obese respondents admitted to unhealthy eating habits, neglecting their health, discontent with their appearance and health problems than other groups.

Forty-nine percent said they ate as much as they wanted, another 49 percent claimed they tried to control their eating. Only 2 percent admitted to dieting.

Asked when they overate, 69 percent named festivities and family meetings, 56 percent dinner and supper, 46 percent meetings with friends, also 46 percent said they needed no special occasion. Forty-two percent said they ate too much when watching TV, 39 percent when drinking alcohol. Thirty percent named stress.

In all 79 percent of the CBOS pollees admitted to overeating.
