Łódź university launches a virtual university for students from Ukraine

University of Humanities and Economics in Łódź has launched the Polish-Ukrainian Virtual University to educate students from across the eastern border, offering classes on e-learning platform and in the University of Humanities and Economics branch in Jarosław.

According to the UHE representative for remote studies Dr. Wiesław Przybyła, the project is an expression of support for the pro-European trends in Ukraine. "The first course, which will be launched at the Polish-Ukrainian Virtual University, will be management" - he emphasized.

UHE attracted partners from the East for the project: National University of Water Management and Use of Natural Resources in Rivne, Carpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk and Gallic Academy in Ivano-Frankivsk.

"Partner universities are our ambassadors in Ukraine. They will assist us in attracting students. Besides, we want our graduates have the opportunity to obtain two university diplomas - Ukrainian and Polish" - added Przybyła.

UHE plans that the Polish-Ukrainian Virtual University will operate at the branch in Jarosław, near the border with Ukraine. UHE rector filed an appropriate application to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. After the positive decision, the university will begin educating students from Ukraine in the next academic year.

Technological and teaching basis for the Polish-Ukrainian Virtual University will be active for 12 years the UHE Polish Virtual University, including e-learning platform, library of teaching materials available on-line, more than 400 multimedia courses with e-textbooks and teaching staff prepared for remote teaching.

Przybyła noted that approx. 60 percent classes will be conducted via the internet. The remaining 40 percent and exams will take place during sessions at the university branch in Jarosław. The teaching language will be Polish.

According to the UHE representative, letter of intent signed by the rector of the UHE and Ukrainian universities provides for the gradual development of the project and launching new courses responding to market demand in the future.

UHE (formerly the School of Humanities and Economics) has the status of the university since 1993. It offers undergraduate and second degree courses in three faculties in Łódź and remote faculties in Jasło, Warsaw, Trzcianka and Wodzisław Śląski.
