PLN 50 million for universities to develop students' professional competence

48 programs run by 39 universities received funding in the government\'s Competency Development Programme. Universities will use the awarded grants worth a total of PLN 50 million to strengthen professional competence of students by increasing the number of internships, teaching time management and negotiation.

In June, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced the Competency Development Programme in order to improve the chances of students and graduates on the labour market. The programme was co-created by the National Centre for Research and Development. By 2020, the government will have spent over 1 billion zlotys on its implementation.

Schools selected in the programme (21 public and 18 non-public schools) will use the money for purposes including the development of interpersonal skills of students: the ability to properly use the Polish language, formulating opinions, team building, conflict resolution, negotiation techniques, entrepreneurship, time management, effective communication, and effective problem solving.

"Employers emphasise that graduates of our universities have extensive theoretical knowledge but lack creativity, analytical and communication skills. And this makes it difficult to build a career and achieve professional success. Competency Development Programme will help to change that. It will also support modern methods of teaching, interdisciplinary studies and the use of new technologies in education" - said the Minister of Science and Higher Education Prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobińska.

According to Ministry of Science and Higher Education release, in the first edition of the programme most projects will be carried out by universities, and the leader in this group is the University of Wrocław. Among the winners there are also three technical colleges, three medical colleges, three State Higher Vocational Schools and one art school. They will spend the awarded funds on involvement of employers in training programs, internships, workshops and counseling for students in their last year of studies.

"Polish economy needs well-educated, creative and industrious graduates. We support innovative Polish companies are not only by subsidizing research and development, but also by investing in the development of their future employees" - emphasised the director of the National Centre for Research and Development, Prof. Krzysztof Jan Kurzydłowski.

Competency Development Programme replaced the ordered courses programme, in which 86 universities have participated since its launch in the academic year 2008/2009.
