Experts: almost every third Pole had sex with a person met online

More and more people look for sexual partners online. It is no longer a marginal phenomenon, the internet has a permanent place in our intimate life - believes Prof. Zbigniew Izdebski, head of the Department of Biomedical Basis for Development and Sexology at the University of Warsaw.

Izdebski’s research on sexuality of the Poles shows that 30 percent men and 27 percent women admit to have had sex with a person just met online.

Until recently it seemed that mostly men seek meeting other persons online, usually for erotic purposes. The latest research shows that women are becoming more and more active online. Prof. Izdebski believes that the anonymity offered by the Internet makes women flirting at a computer screen more open in expressing their sexual needs and expectations. They use the language and say things they do not have the courage to say during direct contact.

According to Dr. Krzysztof Nowosielski of the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Provincial Specialist Hospital, mainly young people engage in online sex. Mature people use dating sites and instant messaging. Cyberspace offers more options than the real world.

In his view, the Internet facilitates meeting people especially by those lonely and shy. People with disabilities and those with special sexual needs also increasingly look for partners online.

Dr. Nowosielski warns, however, that in spite of so many undeniable advantages, cybersex also carries many risks. For example, it can lead to broken relationship. And it\'s not just about having sex with a person met online. The expert quoted the research of psychologist from the Queen\'s University Belfast, Prof. Monica Whitty, according to which online cheating is perceived the same way as cheating in the real world.

Another threat of cybersex is that both the real partner and the real world may cease to be attractive. This creates a feeling of frustration and dissatisfaction. Disappointment often follows when an online acquaintance is subject to verification in real life. Experts say, however, that it is worth trying. You just need to know what your expectations are and not waste time on idle connections.

According to the data presented by Dr. Nowosielski, in the U.S. almost 70 percent people admit that at least once in their lives they have engaged in cybersex, understood both as a way to meet people and flirt, searching for erotic content, as well as watching each other on webcams.

According to Diane Kholos Wysocki from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, the most common form of cheating among Americans is sexting and sending naked pictures via the Internet or mobile phone. In her opinion, the Internet is not to blame for loosening of morals. Persons who do not use Internet chat too, argues the scientist in "Sexuality & Culture". She adds that the Internet only makes dating easier and saves time.
